The Huawei P10 is the first smartphone to come with a Leica front camera. For those of you who don't know, Leica is one of the most renowned brand in the camera and lens industry. Their camera and lenses are used by many professional photographers who search for the best optical quality lense. Their lenses for interchangeable lens cameras like for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are also very expensive.
This was a really great surprise to see Huawei investing so much in the front camera. I thought that with such an amazing dual-lens rear camera, the front camera won't be that good, but oh boy I was wrong. The front camera features a 8MP sensor and an f/1.9 Leica optics. I didn't find information about the exact sensor module that was used for the front camera. However, in the Huawei P10 camera promotional video, it says: "New generation image sensor". So we can just assume that the front camera uses a different sensor than the Sony IMX179 (8MP, 1/3.2", 1.4µm) used in the P9 and P9 Plus for the front camera. The P9 and P9 Plus camera employs a F2.4 aperture, whether the P10 and P10 Plus front camera comes with a much faster F1.9 aperture lens, and of course, Leica optics.
On the official Huawei P10 page on huawei.com, Huawei wrote; "Large sensor capture 200 percent more light". So I believe that the new sensor is therefore larger than the one used in the P9 and has larger pixels, however I can't be 100% sure because there is no detailed specifications that tells us the exact sensor size, resolution and pixel size.
The P10 employs various advanced technologies that was designed to make it perform better for self-portrait selfie shots. This include an advanced Pixel Binning Technology that provides up to two times brighter images for low-light selfies, a natural Bokeh (background blur) effect and Adaptive Selfie whch automatically adjust the frame depends how many faces are in the frame.
The front camera made by Leica is one of the main advantages of this phone, especially for people who love taking selfies and want to take selfies of high image quality.
